It was not long ago that I was telling my buddy Dave (a Yankees fan) how that I actually had some grudging respect for his team this year. They had a crapload of injuries, they still won the division by a mile, and they finally seemed like they’d reloaded for the playoffs. Their lineup was scary, their pitching rotation was finally getting it together (Hey! Carl Pavano! How’s it going? Oh wait…) and with Joe Torre pulling the strings, what could go wrong?
A week later, the Yankees are golfing, A-Rod’s post-season batting average is looking like Stevie Wonder’s accuracy at the shooting range, and there was serious talk out of New York that Joe Torre might be unemployed, sooner rather than later.
I’m genuinely impressed with the Tigers. They had just enough timely hits, situational pitching, and amazing managing to get by what some people were calling the scariest lineup ever assembled. Now, they’re two wins from the World Series. However, I stand by my point that I respect the Yankees for what they did. Trust me, I’m no Yankees fan, but I think that they put together a better season than most teams would have done in their situation, and making the playoffs for 11 years in a row isn’t too shabby either.
