After a 24 year drought, Aaron Smith won his third WSOP Tournament bracelet and the $1.78 million dollar first prize. His last championship, in 1982, was worth $92,500. Saturdays first place payout was the highest in the history of the WSOP in an event other than the championship final tournament. Reese beat out poker pro Andy Bloch who collected $1.03 million for second place. More from your Guide
Aaron Smith Wins 5rd WSOP Bracelet
The three-day HORSE tournament, which had a record buy-in of $50,000
per player and attracted 143 players, consisted of five different poker
games that rotated every 40 minutes, with the stakes increasing roughly
every three hours. The games for HORSE are: Holdem, Omaha, Razz, Stud
and Stud Eight or Better or Hi/Lo.
Corzine's 44 percent approval rating in the Quinnipiac University poll
released Friday is his best showing since January, according to Clay F.
Richards, assistant director of the poll. Meanwhile, 71 percent of
those polled said they disapprove of the way the Legislature is
handling its job, with only 20 percent saying they approve. That's the
lowest approval rating in a decade.
New Jersey Governor Gets Boost in Polls
In
a recent poll, New Jersey Governor is enjoying a boost in popularity as
voters are blaming the State's Legislature for the budget stalemate
that shut down the casinos in Atlantic City earlier this month.
Fifty-eight percent of those surveyed by the poll blamed the
Legislature for the delayed budget while 19 percent blamed Corzine, and
14 percent blamed both.
Southern
Gaming and Destinations Magazine has announced that the voting is now
open for the 8th annual "Best of Southern Gaming Awards. This is the
second year that the awards are being sponsored by Norwegian Cruise
Line and Travelworm.com and one randomly selected voter will receive a
free cruise for two from Norwegian with airfare provided by Travelworm.
Voting is open from July 1st until August 31st.WSOP Shattering Records From The StartThe
World Series of Poker kicked of the 2006 tournament on Monday June 25th
with the annual Casino Employee's Tournament. The real action got
underway the next day with the $1,500 buy-in no limit tournament that
shattered records with 2,776 players making it one of the largest poker
tournaments in history. Only the 2005 WSOP main event attracted more
players. (5,619)
The tournament was a sell out and there were 488 alternate players who
were seated as other players busted out. The seating of the alternates
took only two hours for the 3 day tournament. The event was won by
Brandon Cantu who took down the $757,839 first prize.
Atlantic City Casinos Reopen
Gov.
Jon S. Corzine signed an executive order at 6 a.m. Saturday directing
state departments and agencies to resume services after lawmakers
passed a budget, ending a stalemate that forced a weeklong government
shutdown.
The casinos reopened around 8 am Saturday mornining. It was estimated
that the shut down cost the casinos about $30 million in lost business.

Atlantic City Casinos Closed
For
the first time in 28 years the casinos in Atlantic City are shut down.
State law prohibits the casinos remaining open without the supervision
of Casino Control Commission employees, who join the ranks of the
45,000 state workers already furloughed during the budget crisis. The casios generrate about 1.3 million per day in tax revenue for the State and this wil only add to the budget woes. The Atlantic City casinos have a $1.1 billion payroll and spend billions more on goods and services. The state gets an 8 percent cut of their revenue.
Casinos
in Atlantic City will shut down at 8am Wednesday because of a budget
crisis in New Jersey that will shut down many "non essential" government agencies. Gov. Jon S. Corzine signed an executive order on
Saturday shutting down the state's government, for the first time in
its history.
Those "non essential" services include the regulators who oversee the
casino operations. Atlantic City's 12 casinos, which cannot operate
without state regulators in place, have been ordered by the state's
Casino Control Commission to close at 8am Wednesday morning. The New
Jersey lottery was closed on Sunday and the State's racetrack closed
down Monday.
Govenor Jon S. Corzine plans to meet with the 120 New Jersey lawmakers later this morning.
